For someone who came to prominence as the poster boy of a micro-genre built upon ephemerality, Chaz Bear – the man behind Toro Y Moi – has stuck around by consistently expanding his horizons across a rapidly growing canon of work, striking out into lush space disco, jazzed-up R&B, sunny rock jams and even a dance record under the name Les Sins.

Perhaps that’s why Boo Boo comes as a slight disappointment: this return to the lo-fi synths and somnambulant tempos of his debut Causers Of This is his first backwards step, and while there’s some fine ambient pop glimmers throughout the album (Mona Lisa as a case in point), the ambition and surprise of an album like Anything In Return is lacking here.
