Ali Welford reviews the compelling new release from The Weather Station
Fat Possum
Released: 05.02.21
Off the back of a year dominated by Hiam, Fiona Apple and Taylor Swift, Tamara Lindeman and her band’s abrupt shift from guitar-based folk to key-led alt. pop runs the risk of appearing staged. Any cynicism, however, evaporates rapidly within Ignorance’s gloriously melodious runtime – particularly during an opening half where practically every number sounds like a potential crossover single.
Adorned variously with luscious strings, spiralling synths and pinches of sax, the beauty exuded by the likes of Robber, Tried to Tell You and Loss nevertheless lies in understatement – an approach which favours rhythm and tenacious effervescence over theatrical twists or glitzy choruses. Beyond a compelling reinvention, there’s every chance it could be the Toronto artist’s defining moment.
