Ben Lowes-Smith discovers a gloriously technicolour collection
Fat Possum
Released: 04.03.22
HIITISLATS is a companion piece to last year’s Ignorance, a gloriously technicolour collection of songs packing considerable emotional weight. This is very much the other end of the spectrum of Tamara Lindeman’s songwriting, recorded live in three days and arranged very minimally, taking cue from jazz standards in its utilisation of silence and subtlety.
It’s a showcase in the elasticity of Lindeman’s writing and the range of her incredible voice, a record timeless in its production and its subject matter. Endless Time recalls early Regina Spektor in its cadence and melancholy, Taught is a more fleshed out arrangement showcasing Lindeman’s jazzier impulses. Marvellously, HIITISLATS maintains a beautiful, consistent atmosphere over its relatively concise ten songs. It’s a strong case for Lindeman as one of Canada’s best contemporary songwriters.
