For a prolific band well into their second decade, The Wave Pictures have never really registered with me but I’m glad this is the album that did because it’s a collaboration with the mighty Billy Childish, who produced, co-wrote and played on it. And it really is marvellous stuff, the band’s more indie impulses married to Childish’s garage punk sensibilities. There’s a typical Headcoats-esque rawness to many of these songs (saturated as ever with early Who) but it’s still very much a Wave Pictures album, their love of the Modern Lovers to the fore. There’s even a couple of rather excellent Creedence covers where everyone sounds like they’re having a fine old time. Typically lovely Billy Childish artwork too!
