Having spent the best part of 35 years employing a revolving door policy, this latest Melvins album finds Buzz Osbourne and Dale Crover joined by not one, but two bassists. This dual strategy is, of course, one they’ve tried before with drummers, yet from opener Stop Moving to Florida it’s clear this novelty bears greater substance; with current incumbent Steven McDonald and sometime Butthole Surfer Jeff Pinkus’s contrasting styles entangling to terrific low-end effect.

Elsewhere, the folk-cum-sludge metal oddity Don’t Forget to Breathe is the most satisfying experiment they’ve conjured in some time, and while inessential the LP itself succeeds in offering yet another angle to one of the US underground’s most confounding icons.
