Lee Fisher reviews the new release from the NYC four-piece

Everybody knows the key role played by gospel in the rhythm & blues and soul creation myth, but with a few exceptions, most gospel since its heyday has been pretty slick. Praise be then for Harlem Gospel Travelers, a NYC four-piece who totally embody the joy and the defiance of golden-era gospel.
For every joyful noise unto the creator, there’s a song of resistance (gospel was always supposed to be about more than just praise) and some of these tracks – like God’s In Control, Fight On and Hold Your Head Up – kick some serious ass. Barely (or not even) out of their teens, these four men have strong and distinctive voices, some properly rousing Black pride and a knack for tapping into the gospel glory days.
