Lee Fisher reviews the newly collated album of material from The Frightnrs
Daptone Records
Released: 27.05.22
When vocalist Dan Klein passed in 2016, just before his band The Frightnrs released the greatest rocksteady album of the millennium, it felt like we were being robbed of something special. The love for Nothing More To Say was in perfect proportion to just how special that album is.
You can’t blame Daptone or the band for trying to find some more Klein magic digging among the tapes to put this new set together but while it’s fine in places, more often it feels like what it is. Klein’s voice is always a thing of fragile beauty but some of the vocals don’t feel finished and there’s a lot of filler here. Enjoy this for the odd great song but it’s that astonishing debut that will endure.
