Bella Union

Released: 13.01.17

If, like me, you thought that in their prime (roughly 1992-2002), The Flaming Lips were about the best band in the world, the ensuing years have been really dispiriting, every ‘return to form’ release being anything but.

The first couple of songs on Oczy Mlody hinted that they might have turned a corner, but it’s a short-lived feeling. While better than The Terror or any of the endless wacky covers projects of late, this is just a bore. The same washed out electronic palette and lack of melodies that have plagued the last decade dominate again.

This is an album of perfectly tasteful filler without any of the outstanding melodies they used to excel at. Ennui never sounded so fucking dull.
