In an industry where personality is king, music has a habit of throwing up characters who seem incapable of working with others. Jonny Pierce’s relationship with long-time collaborator Jacob Graham was always fraught and Abysmal Thoughts is essentially now a solo project.

Don’t be put off by crude song titles like Are U Fucked and Blood Under My Belt, though, this is a blissful heartbreak record and perhaps Pierce at his most pop yet. The Smiths influences are there from opener Mirrors, latest single Heart Basel is politely perky while If All We Share (Means Nothing) is utterly lovely. Elsewhere it’s a bit shoegazey and while Abysmal Thoughts is certainly up there with the band’s previous work, it’s hardly reinventing the wheel.
