From the Vangelis-alike synth chords that open Because The End Is Really The Beginning, The Comet Is Coming’s second album Trust In The Lifeforce Of The Deep Mystery pushes further into the band’s cosmic mythos. While there’s still room for high tempo workouts like Super Zodiac, much of their second album purses a more atmospheric sound, with Dan Leavers’ synthesisers often taking up more space than Shabaka Hutchings’ saxophone.
When it works, as on the beautiful slow-motion blur of The Universe Wakes Up, the effect is thrilling, but this shift in emphasis does result in an unevenly paced record (not helped by a banal Kate Tempest cameo that slams would-be centrepiece Blood Of The Past to a halt.) Their defining recording, you suspect, is still to come.
