This EP is a change in pace from 2014’s delicate, complex Paperback Ghosts and it’s a misstep. After breaking out thrillingly on Casino Classics, Comet Gain really flourished in the noughties as essential modern documenters of kitchen-sink England.

What’s dispiriting is the sound of a band parroting their heroes. Breaking Open The Head Part 2 starts off tense but dissipates into a tired stab at a Sonic Youth jam, That Lucifer Summer and To The City’s Core emulate early keyboard-heavy Fall but achieve none of their wild malice, while The Obsolete Significant Dignified is as interesting as its title suggests.

Aiming for noise rather than nous, they misplace the songwriting craft that is their greatest asset.
