Stephen Oliver reviews the new release from the Canadian group
Metropolis Records
Released: 27.03.20
From the opening fanfare of the first track Enter, you know that you are in familiar Birthday Massacre territory on the Canadian group’s latest offering; that coexistence of positive sounding music layered with poetic lyrical themes, which are often dark.
Strong Gothic keyboards swirl around as distorted guitar supplements the melody in a progressive way. Meanwhile Chibi’s lyrics fly just above in the mix, sometimes whispering, other times breaking out in a clear reassuring resonance. The rhythms are danceable and this will be a hit in those dark Berlin clubs. Diamonds represents a collection of night time songs that needs to be played at volume, and this album will happily tuck in between All About Eve and Sisters of Mercy.
