Mark Corcoran-Lettice discovers exciting new dimensions to Suuns’ sound
Secretly Canadian
Released: 02.03.18
If their last three albums have found Suuns slowly paring down and refining the formula for their tense, clenched teeth electro rock, on Felt the band seem intent on adding a little more colour and room to breathe to their sound.
Although the discomfort of their previous material remains, the (deliberately) messier, less constrained approach the band adopt this time round yields dividends on the luminous, vocoder-driven Watch You, Watch Me and the fine closing one-two of Moonbeams and Materials. Not everything that Suuns try here lands – opener Look No Further starts things on something a dud note – but the peaks here reveal exciting new dimensions and intriguing possibilities to a band that looked to have already shown their full hand.
