A project born from near-tragedy, Colchester musician Kevin Pearce established Sun Cutter as a rehabilitative exercise during his recovery from a heart-attack some three years back. Manifesting in 11 slices of soulful guitar pop, the resulting record is ostensibly straightforward yet gracefully arranged, seeking comfort in the familiar with generous melody and subtle synth flourishes.

Its vibe calls to mind the great pioneers of the ‘60s, together with modern acolytes such as The Coral, Richard Hawley and Rufus Wainwright – though crucially Pearce displays the assurance to carve his own emotional space.

Indeed, with focus centred on mental as opposed to physical health, it’s the empathy underpinning the likes of Hold Out and Stand Your Ground which renders Sun Cutter such an endearing endeavour.
