Spiral Stairs has designs to entrap you in his musical spell. Founding member of Pavement and then Preston School of Industry returns with a solo album that rips out of the traps. Turbo-terrific opener Hyp-No-Tized builds to a crescendo with the kind of angular guitars and colossal riff you might expect. But on second track, The Fool, Scott Kannberg deploys a vocal style with shades of Van Morrison and he drops further back through the gears for the reflective Diario.

Further influences from Van as well as early Nick Lowe show in a more expansive but still wilfully alternative approach. Above all though, this album really rocks. Tunes with hooks the size of bishops crooks. I am smitten and totally under his powers.
