Jonathan Horner discovers the dark and conflicted second instalment in Son Lux’s epic trilogy

Tomorrows II is the second act in an epic trilogy for Son Lux. Like all great second acts, it is darker and more conflicted than the opening. Ryan Lott’s glitching, breathy falsetto continues, as does their disoriented dance back and forth from pop hooks to experimental electronics. But the environment is sparser, it feels restless, conflicted.
This is best demonstrated on Leaves; it’s not clear in the intro whether the guitar is hurrying the drums along or the drums are rushing the bass. Either way the sense of urgency continues as they tackle imbalance, disruption, collision, redefinition. In Apart, Lott cries “I’ve broken so much more than I can heal” and we feel it. Will the conclusion provide us the resolution we crave? Stay tuned for Pt. Three.
