ALBUM REVIEW: Sohn – Rennen | NARC. | Reliably Informed | Music and Creative Arts News for Newcastle and the North East

Reliably informed

Released: 13.01.17

Blending the more cerebral side of synth pop with the abstract mechanics of Autechre, Sohn’s new release, Rennen, maintains the brilliant sonic density of 2014’s Tremors, with waves of both melodic and abrasive synths colliding with beats that meld drum machines, percussion and unorthodox samples together to create songs a great deal more unique and forward-thinking than the majority of synth-driven music.

Like label-mate Grimes, SOHN’s voice is as powerful an instrument as the arsenal of synths he has at his disposal, but his mastery of them is just as majestic. The sound of Rennen is diverse and daring: R&B meets relentless experimentation meets soul meets techno. Brilliantly bold, soulful, interesting and unafraid of catching you off-guard.
