Snapped Ankles are such a wonderfully odd live band that it would be natural to wonder how well they’d work on record, free of the sasquatch costumes and the midi-triggered movie clips. But it turns out they work a treat, as debut album Come Play The Trees demonstrates.

This is a surprisingly fun album, somehow finding a sweet spot between post punk, synth pop and tribal percussion and managing to sound a little like The Normal, The Units and 23 Skidoo, sometimes on the same song. Opening title track delves into a ritualistic drum workout without descending into Goaty appropriation, lead single Jonny Guitar is an off kilter electro-banger and there’s a frantic – possibly slightly maniacal –energy and rush of ideas throughout.

Splendid stuff.
