Even prior to release, The Center Won’t Hold has already established itself as a pivotal moment in Sleater-Kinney’s rich history. The recruitment of one so singular as Annie Clark as producer was bold, and the outcome seems to have contributed to Janet Weiss departing after nearly a quarter of a century as the band’s driving force.

The Center Won’t Hold may have come at a high cost, but it’s an absolute triumph musically. Clark’s fingerprints are frequently visible, but the Sleater-Kinney aesthetic is strong enough to bear this, and her flourishes breathe new life into their music. This is never more obvious than on the vibrant, pulsating LOVE. This is a brilliant piece of work, but was it worth it?
