Considering how good it all sounds, the fact that Sharon Jones’ final studio album with the Dap-Kings also happens to be their most formulaic effort since 2014’s Grammy-winning Give The People What They Want isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Recorded during Jones’ protracted battle with cancer, it’s not only a bittersweet musical triumph, but also a fitting swansong for the indomitable soul chanteuse.

Funk-touched scorchers like Matter of Time and Sail On brilliantly showcase the almost preternatural synergy between Jones’ powerhouse vocals and the band’s tastefully jazzed-up instrumentation, while slow-burning ballads like Pass Me By and Call On God highlight Jones’ masterful proclivity for conveying emotional poignancy through song.

Many thanks for the tunes (and memories), Ms Jones. Rest well.
