Well this is marvellously unexpected but as marvellous as you’d expect. Shackleton was always the most fascinating member of the wub-wub diaspora, moving from dubstep tropes to a constant series of fascinating, percussion-driven releases. Ben Chasny is a constant collaborator and innovator, permanently pushing the envelope of the guitar’s possibilities.

This release has been described as “no-brainer fusion of Shackleton’s bass heavy cosmic dread and Six Organs’ ritual folksong” which seems apt – it plays to each of their strengths but still goes somewhere different and pleasing. Electrical Storm has an almost Lyke Wake Dirge feel but with added gamelan vibes, and Open Your Heart could be from those early Swans reunion albums, brooding and foreboding. This is a deep and powerful stuff to lose yourself in
