Before Daft Punk went funk and Justice decided to modernise 70s glam, RATATAT were making some of the best guitar-driven dance music of the new millennium. They might not have gained huge commercial success but their fifth studio album begs the question why? Inspired by everything from delta blues and soul to electronica and prog rock, Magnifique is a thoroughly enjoyable instrumental romp. The title track and a cover of Springwater’s I Will Return (their only cover to date) contain lavish doses of slide guitar, while single Cream On Chrome and Countarch contain more dance floor-friendly beats. There’s even a bit of Queen-flavoured power riffage in Cold Fingers that can’t help to put a smile on your face. C’est magnifique.
