Having believed 2014’s Indie Cindy to be unfairly maligned and that 2016’s Head Carrier was actually rather decent, I’m one of those rare souls who still approaches new Pixies records with a degree of optimism. Whether that resolve remains for their next effort remains to be seen, however, as swathes of Beneath The Eyrie are so pedestrian as to pose an endurance test.

Indeed, it’s not until Long Rider, stationed at the album’s mid-point, that we encounter our first meaningful stirrings of life – and although it ushers in a livelier second half, the damage already wreaked proves beyond repair. Mediocre and above all dispiriting, it’ll take far more than this to re-engage an estranged following.
