Robin Webb reviews the new release from eclectic musician Piney Gir
STRS Records
Released: 01.11.19
Seven albums in and Piney Gir has produced a decent slab of Brit Pop-inspired West Coast rock, with an essence of San Franciscan psychedelia to accentuate her sound, which also occasionally drifts into a 90s alternative vibe.
Like many artists at the moment she can’t help but be influenced by wider events in her lyrics: betrayal, depression and the state of the world feature as she positively faces up to the challenge, whilst tunes such as Little Cop and The Great Pretend have an edgy new wave air to them. Piney is helped out by several members of Gaz Coombes’ band that she occasionally sings backing vocals for; their influence is certainly felt in the tracks Puppy Love and Dreamcatcher.
