There’s no doubting New Jersey’s Phoebe Ryan’s talent as a songwriter on the breezy See Myself and Little Piece, recalling early Gabrielle Aplin. Like her music, her voice is refrained and it’s a shock to hear her drop an F-bomb on Just Like Me, such is the laid-back shine of her brand of pop.
The tempo rarely changes and though Ryan sings of wild nights, they don’t seem to have left their mark. Having written for artists as diverse as Britney Spears and All Time Low, this is a debut album that is nice enough but resonates little and unless she shakes it up a little, she’ll sadly be remembered as a writer of others hits, rather than her own.
