Stalwarts of post-metal’s second tier, Chicago’s Pelican return after six years with a record which neither harms nor enhances their standing. As pure riff-makers, they can mix it with the best of them. Bearing trademark gargantuan scale, the likes of Cold Hope and Arteries of Blacktop are the sound of a band plugging in and letting off steam, shifting through the gears with bulldozing efficiency.

We’ve heard all of this before, of course, and as such Nighttime Stories is at its most enthralling when Pelican break the mould. Exhibit A is Abyssal Plain, a number which introduces blast beats and cold black metal gallops to their repertoire, enlivening a blazing, if inessential, comeback.
