With David Bazan having made the decision to revive his past guise Pedro The Lion for a series of live shows in 2017, Phoenix marks the first release from the project in fifteen years. While Bazan has decided to retake full compositional duties following the collaborative nature of 2004’s Achilles Heel, much of the music on Phoenix takes its cues from the sprightlier, brighter sound of that record than the more understated and celebrated likes of Winners Never Quit.

This isn’t to take away from a record full of enjoyably sharp and economical songwriting – Powerful Taboo and Quietest Friend are very welcome additions to the group’s catalogue – but while there’s plenty to appreciate in Phoenix, it makes for a curious use of the Pedro The Lion name.
