“Sidestep and the whole world appears”, sings Paul Smith on penultimate track Trevone, and in six words he sums up Frozen By Sight. In a sliver of downtime from their day jobs, Smith and Peter Brewis take us on a tour of the world via a series of wistful ruminations on cities near and far. There’s plenty to love here for fans of Field Music and Maximo Park with delicate, occasionally playful piano anchoring the record, and Smith’s soft, increasingly intimate croon fitting in beautifully with the lush wash of strings. They take the opportunity to experiment with the songs too, and the result is an ambitious, satisfying piece of work which blends the new and familiar with enviable panache.
