Reliably informed

Castle Face Records

Released: 16.08.19

How would the new Oh Sees record present itself as a person? Perhaps one who spends loads of money on clothes, but sartorial elegance still evades them. For a songwriter as consistent as John Dwyer, this is the first Oh Sees record I’ve heard that seems bafflingly unaware of its strengths and weaknesses.

It explores an interesting vein of its SNES-informed chiptune aesthetics, but for every refreshing blast of that – as on Fu Xi – there’s some piss poor dad rock noodling over which Dwyer intones about corrupt politicians. For an auteur like Dwyer this is a bizarrely disjointed record with an absence of personality.
