As someone who likes their indie pop laced with fuzz, even I have to admit that a cloud of reverb can occasionally be misused as a cloak to disguise the absence of songs. Based on their various releases so far though, this never seemed likely to be an issue with Novella’s first LP. And nor has it proved to be, because Land is a thoroughly impressive collection of songs, blending lovely 90s shoegaze textures with hypnotic Krautrock rhythms. It’s an entirely immersive experience, which, depending on your viewpoint is either its greatest strength or its biggest shortcoming. It’s a luxuriant late night sonic bath, rather than a bracing early morning shower to rouse the ears. An excellent debut.
