When a band has as much of a sonic identity as Moon Duo, it would be foolish to go looking for paradigm shifts in their sound when approaching a new album – subtle shifts of emphasis are more their thing. So while third album Shadow Of The Sun couldn’t be by anybody else, there are nonetheless changes – it’s funkier somehow (the addition of a drummer seems to have allowed them to explore rhythms outside their standard Dinger-beat chug) and lighter on its feet too. Zero in particular is practically poppy, like a lysergic take on Rock Lobster. This third album probably isn’t going to win over anyone who isn’t already a Moon Duo fan but there’s a lot to love here.
