L.A. trio Moaning truly live up to their name on their self-titled debut, morose lyrics drenched in reverb filling every track. In spite of the minimal hope and positivity demonstrated by Moaning, their ferocity and angst is the redeeming feature of this record, but even this is often sparse. Opening with the suitably bruising Don’t Go, it’s an intense start but one which fails to be maintained; with every relentlessly powerful track there is one that is lacklustre and tiresome following it.

There are some promising moments in the form of Artificial and Somewhere In There, but these flashes of brilliance do not make up for the tedious mediocrity and lack of enthusiasm that forms the rest of the album.
