After 2016’s enormously well received Puberty 2, Mitski Miyawaki applies her bittersweet melancholy to a considerably more musically widescreen musical palette. The lo-fi electronics and Chan Marshall-isms of previous work are still in place and, like previous records, this is still a success in brevity.

It is however, an all-round more Technicolor affair; Me And My Husband (an endearingly direct love song) straddles almost vaudeville territory; lead single Geyser, perhaps something of a red herring at the start of the record given the weighty emotional punch it packs, is Miyawaki’s finest songwriting to date; while Lonesome Love feels like a Patsy Cline standard being beamed down from space. Indeed an awful lot on Be The Cowboy is reminiscent of breakthrough records by St. Vincent and Angel Olsen, don’t be surprised if she follows a similar trajectory.
