Maybe it’s the glorious artwork inspiring my opinions here, but Mdou Moctar’s Ilana (The Creator) offers a brilliant departure from the engrossing atmospheres of 2017’s Sousoume Tamachek, opting for a rhythm-propelled assault of virtuosity which melds intricate fret wrangling with the fuzzy expanse of Oh Sees (that being said, the absolutely face-melting solo that rips right through the middle of Asshet Akal is visceral enough to make John Dwyer opt for an early retirement).

Moctar is an utter visionary, taking the distinctive Tuareg approach to the guitar and mixing it with a broad pool of sounds and atmospheres, and it makes for such an engrossing and refreshing experience of a record. Exceptional.
