Jonathan Coll discovers the new release from Canadian music maker Marie Davidson
Ninja Tune
Released: 05.10.18
It’s nigh-on impossible to pigeonhole exactly what Marie Davidson produces, but an album released on Ninja Tune is usually a fine stamp of approval. It seemed fairly certain that her new release, Working Class Woman, would be a further ascent from the high water mark of 2016’s Adieux au Dancefloor. It is, however, a departure from the frenetic techno of her previous work.
The album begins in typically surreal fashion with Your Biggest Fan; a percussive, haphazard ode to sycophantic music fans. It’s a theme which continues throughout, each track towing the same line of gothic poetic prose. It will be interesting to see how the new tracks carry into her live show, with Lara and Daydreaming being particular highlights.
