Maribou State tread a fine line between indie and electronica. It’s a balance which has served them well. Recent shows at Prince Charles in Berlin and Sonar Barcelona are typical of a packed summer schedule. Kingdoms in Colour strikes a pleasing balance between Maribou State’s two preferred genres. A smart use of vocalists elevates many of the tracks above the level of ‘warm-up club DJ’ and into the realm of ‘evening slot on a festival main stage’.

Nowhere is this more evident than Nervous Tics; a pop number with a lovely vocal from Holly Walker. Closing track Kalma is a nice mix of melancholic chords and synth, and while the album doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it’s a nice listen nonetheless.
