I was sucked in hook, line and sinker by Margaret Glaspy’s last album, Emotions And Math. It has a lot going for it; really direct, interesting guitar playing, strong lyrics and incredibly melodic songwriting.

To me, the decision to make an awkward sounding synth pop record, which ends up being less direct and more ephemeral, feels baffling. It’s more hodge-podge, less purposeful but not without merit. Heartbreak utilises gorgeous Portishead-ish instrumentation to hair-raising effect and Glaspy’s voice is a joy throughout the record. It’s a shame that so much of Devotion seems to float by. It feels like a missed opportunity, or a necessary diversion.
