Sadly, it seems that the once brazen style of Canadian jizz-jazz extraordinaire Mac DeMarco has been lost behind a cloud of cigarette smoke.

Whilst the title track is pleasant enough, the silky-smooth guitar drone that can be found on songs like Sister demonstrate that perhaps this old dog can’t learn any new tricks: rather, DeMarco remains trapped in a cycle of lo-fi repetition, producing a watered-down version of 2014’s brightly trilling Salad Days but without its wonky charm. But there’s hope for the gap-toothed ragamuffin yet: standout track On the Level possesses hints of kitschy 80s electronica, scattered across a soft bed of melancholic lyricism. Perhaps, then, we should excuse DeMarco this time, on account of his being down in the dumps.
