The typically effortless M Ward is back, following his exploits with Zooey Deschanel. More Rain is a record that sees Ward in a reflective state; the beautiful I’m Listening portrays this perfectly, through his introverted lyrics. However, there is also an emphasis on experimentation, particularly the layering of his voice, creating this haunting tone at times. On more upbeat tracks like Temptation, the heavy reverb on his voice perfectly blends with the blasts of brass in the backing track.

This experimentation also shines through on the more relaxed tracks on the album, where it creates an elegant choral effect that blends perfectly against the delicate instrumentation. It’s a deeply diverse album, which sees Ward’s contemplative lyrics take centre stage.
