It’s already been a great year for gloriously sludgy guitar noise (think Henry Blacker, Grey Hairs, Hey Colossus) and here come Luminous Bodies. A supergroup of sorts – Supernormal Festival in band form – LB make no secret of their love for Butthole Surfers (one of the finest tracks on this debut is the ‘so dumb it’s genius’ Lady Graveyard, a misbegotten mash-up of the Buttholes’ Graveyard and Tom Jones’ She’s A Lady). But as the album staggers from the frenzied rock ’n’ roll of Destroyed to the cod-mystical psych of Om Naman Shivaya via distorted garage and twisted AmRep hardcore, Luminous Bodies reveal themselves as the magnificent culmination of everything that’s truly, fantastically wrong about 30 years of fucked up noise.
