Lee Hammond discovers a relatable and heartfelt album from Lucy Dacus
Matador
Released: 25.06.21
The greatly anticipated third album from Lucy Dacus is everything you could want and more, opening with the driving Hot & Heavy. It sets an immediate precedent, her raw words borne out of her formative years. With the entire album revolving around this theme, where young love is often at the forefront. It’s a very personal record, but one which showcases Dacus’ brilliant songwriting skills to their fullest.
The likes of Brando and Thumbs are where Dacus is at her most powerful though, particularly the latter; the stripped-back track allowing the lyrics to flourish. Home Video is definitely her finest work to date, the heartfelt sentiment that runs alongside the relatable nature of the themes make it a superb record.
