Steve Spithray reviews the effortless new release from Lower Slaughter
Box Records
Released: 29.03.19
Lower Slaughter’s doomy rockabilly is breathless and paranoid from the off but that’s not to say Some Things Take Work is all crunching riffs. Reboundaries and Hindsight are straight punk and power rock by comparison, as the Brighton via Glasgow noiseniks find their own sound on their second album.
Sparse segments on the title track and discordant parts of Into The Woods create a barren musical landscape with post-rock aspirations, before the latter launches into an onslaught of riffs and crash fills where somewhere underneath a beautiful melody stirs. Further highlights are the heavy staccato of Revenant, and touches of Swans in single release A Portrait Of The Father and closer The Body. Some things do take work, but this sounds effortless.
