Lee Hammond reviews the dark, but beautifully orchestrated, new album from Laura Gibson
City Slang
Released: 26.10.18
The follow-up to Laura Gibson’s acclaimed Empire Builder, Goners is a very different record as she takes on the concept of grief. With such subject matter this record is extremely dark, but beautifully orchestrated throughout. Delving into such a morose theme is always going to be difficult and Goners may not be for everyone.
Her orchestrations are augmented by exceptional lyrics; Performers stands out as being particularly powerful, there is a truly haunting darkness to this track. It is closing track I Don’t Want Your Voice To Move Me that is by far the deepest, as Gibson laments on the departure of a loved one. Goners is a truly moving and very deep record, and by far Laura Gibson’s best.
