Granted they’re a band that divides critics; some writing them off as soppy drivel and some applauding their ability to connect, but Kodaline’s aptly named sophomore release comes after a whirlwind 18 months.
Whilst In A Perfect World tugged on our heartstrings and shared intimate emotions, this one rouses us with a bigger sound and bigger hooks. There’s a harder, rockier edge as well as more up-tempo tracks making for a much more stimulating sound.
Propulsive percussion on tracks like Ready is offset with string charged tracks like Better, and they’re trussed together with anthemic odes like The One. It’s a definite step-up, it’s polished and ambitious; but ultimately they’ve stuck to what they do best, and that’s tender, emotive pop.
