She scooped the Scottish Album of the Year Award for her 2014 debut and collaborated with James Graham of The Twilight Sad on last year’s Out Lines project, yet this second solo effort already sounds like Kathryn Joseph’s career-defining moment.

A masterwork in sparse, desolate beauty, From When I Wake sees the singer’s mesmeric piano augmented by expanded arrangements courtesy of musical partner Marcus MacKay. These fills and icy electronics prove crucial without ever submerging the artist herself, with staggering highlights such as the title track, Tell My Lover and Safe showcasing a voice whose nuanced intensity has merely been hinted at on past releases. Fragile, crushing and immersive, it’s a dazzling record that’ll leave you bruised and spellbound in equal measure.
