Ali Welford discovers Jon Hopkins’ new album is a “resounding triumph”

Five years on from Immunity, Jon Hopkins returns with a record that’s not so much a game-changer as a diverse expansion of the sonic horizons unlocked by its predecessor.
Certainly, the spliced synth euphoria of Emerald Rush and Everything Connected’s relentless techno throb are bound to liven the Boiler Shop upon his visit this November, yet it’s during the ambient reflections which follow that the former Eno prodigy truly sparkles.
In fact, once its socking opening has simmered the record descends into something of a meditative masterclass, perpetuated by solo piano, passages of extended Elysian bliss and, in Feel First Life, a choral detour of true transcendental wonder.
Tasked with a thankless follow-up, the London producer has turned in another resounding triumph.
