On Damned Devotion, Joan Wasser’s sixth album as Joan As Police Woman, the cut and paste approach of more recent records is rejected in favour of the melancholy songs that dictated her earlier work.

The glacial, textured approach allows Wasser’s voice to take centre stage once again; and it’s a sensual, intimate experience as a result. The glassy-eyed title track is a good overall representation of the feel of the record; its warm sensuality setting the tone. That certainly isn’t to suggest that Damned Devotion has a limited sonic palette – Steed (For Jean Genet)’s chaotic brass parts recall recent St. Vincent. Wasser certainly hasn’t produced her most vital collection of songs here, but it’s a satisfying record that’s a welcome addition to her excellent body of work.
