You wait five years for a new Malin record, then there’s two in six months. Following New York Before The War, Outsiders finds Jesse in a more playful, experimental mood. It’s evident he’s been listening to a lot of funk and jazz on the likes of San Francisco and Society Sally. But, ultimately, it’s when Malin sticks to more familiar territory with the punk rock Here’s The Situation, the glitter in the gutter ballads of In The Summer and Stay Free and the energetic pop of Whitestone City Limits, that he produces his best work. Overall it’s an inconsistent record from an incredibly engaging live performer but often frustrating recording artist.
