Formerly the name used for the solo output of Oli Heffernan, Ivan The Tolerable has now expanded to a full band (including members of Ecstatic Vision and King Champion Sounds amongst others) for the sprawling double album Rations.

Plenty of musicians out there tinker in Can or Neu! fancy dress nowadays, but the free-floating and beautiful psychedelia to be found here goes much further into the astral plain than many are willing to venture. The optimistic pulse of opener Great White Buildings is an apt calling card for the record as a whole, but the surreal lounge-jazz excursion Empty Lantern (Fog), soaring improv of Painted Hands and clenches-fist repetition of The Metallic Sea ensure this is no one-note samba.
