Texan rocker Israel Nash’s fifth album Lifted is the closest I’ll ever get to listening to country music and enjoying it. This is music which evokes classic Southern State imagery with a modern experimental twist.

Nash could be a musician from any decade: there’s hints of 1950s classic rock in the guitar lines. Dreamy extended instrumentals give it a bit of a proggy feel at times, while twists of psychedelia give it that relaxing peace-and-love feel. I defy anyone to listen to Hillsides and not be soothed by its steady drumbeat and airy vocals. It might sound like it’s being played in the distance, but I think that’s part of what makes it such easy listening.
